Tamanu Oil is a remarkable topical healing agent with skin healing, antineuralgic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic and antioxidant properties.
Also known as Calophyllum inophyllum, or the ati tree, the kamani tree, true kamani and foraha, it is a member of the mangosteen family. It is a thick tree with crackled, dark bark and sturdy, roundish green leaves which produces beautiful, aromatic white flowers, followed by clusters of yellow-skinned round fruits. The fruit's pulp tastes similar to an apple, within which a large nut is embedded. The nut contains an odorless pale kernel, called punnai in some Pacific areas. This kernel is dried in the sun for two months until it becomes sticky with a dark, thick, rich oil; it must be protected from humidity and rain during drying. This sticky oil is cold-pressed to make a greenish yellow oil similar to olive oil.
To put this spectacular oil into perspective, and to further justify its relatively high cost, It takes 100 kilograms of Tamanu fruit, the amount that one tree produces annually, to yield just 5 kilograms of cold pressed oil!
The Tamanu tree is indigenous to tropical Southeast Asia; it is found in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, South India, Sri Lanka, and the Polynesian islands. The spread of the Ati occurs via water - the trees thrive in coastal areas and drop their nuts into the water. Time and tide deliver this "driftnuit" to a new shore, and voila! More tamanu.
Natives believed the Tamanu tree was a sacred gift of nature and that gods hid in its branches. It was their answer to skin protection from hot sun, high humidity and ocean wind.
According to A. C. Dweck, "Tamanu oil can be applied on skins as well as mucous membrane lesions. It heals small wounds, such as cracks and chaps, but is also efficient on more serious cutaneous problems: atonic wounds, physical and chemical burns, radiodermatitis, anal fissures or post-surgical wounds. Tamanu oil activity was studied in numerous clinical cases. Those healing, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties make Tamanu oil an excellent raw material in cosmetics, in regenerating and protective formulations. The oil is especially recommended for all kinds of burns (sunburns or chemical burns), most dermatoses, post-surgical cicatrisation, certain skin allergies, acne, psoriasis, herpes, chillblains, skin cracks, diabetic sores, hemorroids, dry skin, insomnia, hair loss, etc. (1) The tamanu plant contains many chemical components which have proven to be helpful in the restoration and regeneration of skin tissue

Current and Traditional Use Across the Globe
Indonesians soak the leaf in water; the resulting blue solution is applied to inflamed eyes or taken internally for heatstroke. It is used as an astringent for hemorrhoids in Philippines. The Manus of Papua New Guinea heat leaves over a fire until they soften, then apply them to skin ulcers, boils, cuts, sores and pimples. On Dobu Island, leaves are boiled, and the resulting solution is used to wash skin rashes.
In the Philippines, the sap is mixed with sulfur to create an ointment for boils, open sores and wounds. In the 18th century, native Jamaicans used a similar species for wounds and sores.
Fiji natives use Tamanu oil for joint pains, arthritis, bruises, oozing wounds, chapped lips and preventing diaper rash. In most south sea islands it is utilized as an analgesic for sciatica, rheumatism and ulcers.
Pacific islanders apply Tamanu oil to scrapes, cuts, burns, insect bites and stings, acne and acne scars, psoriasis, diabetic sores, anal fissures, sunburn, dry or scaly skin, blisters, eczema, diaper rash and herpes sores--and even to reduce foot and body odor!
In Europe, sometimes called Domba oil, it has a 70 to 75 percent success rate in alleviating rheumatism and scabies. It's also effective on gout and ringworm. It can be applied to mucous membrane lesions. It heals chapped skin, post-surgical wounds, skin allergies, cracked skin, bed sores, wounds, rashes, abrasions, athlete's foot, boils, and infected nails.
Tamanu oil has even healed severe burns caused by boiling water, chemicals and X-rays. Its anti-inflammatory properties reduce rashes, sores, swelling and abrasions. Tamanu oil promotes new tissue formation, accelerating healing and healthy skin growth. Tamanu oil reputedly relieves a sore throat when it is applied to the neck. It's pain-relieving properties have also been used traditionally to relieve neuralgia, shingles and believe it or not, leprous neuritis! In the 1920s, Sister Marie-Suzanne, a nun stationed in Fiji, topically applied Tamanu oil to leprosy victims with positive results.

More Powerful than an Antibiotic Tamanu oil possesses significant antimicrobial qualities, as proven in antibacterial and antifungal tests. It contains powerful bactericide and fungicide agents that defeat human and animal pathogens. Tamanu can be applied directly to skin, undiluted. There are no reports of adverse effects from topical application.

Treatment for Scars
Tamanu oil fades stretch marks with incredible results. It also works miracles on scar tissue, making scars look less unsightly. BioScience Laboratories conducted a study of Tamanu oil's ability to improve the appearance of scars. Six subjects with obvious scars aged for one year or more participated in the test. Subjects were not allowed to use moisturizers on their scarred areas for seven days before the test or throughout the nine-week test period. Scars were rated for roughness, length, width and degree of difference from surrounding normal skin. Measurements of darkness and redness were also taken for scarred and surrounding normal skin. Digital photos of scars were taken prior to initial application and at the end of week nine. Tamanu oil was applied to the scarred area twice daily for nine consecutive weeks. There was significant improvement in appearance of scars after six weeks, and improvement continued through week nine. Scar length was reduced by an average 0.28 centimeters, and width was reduced by an average 0.12 centimeters!

For thick, dry hair, Tamanu oil can be applied directly to the hair directly after shampooing or as a deep-moisturizing pre-wash. Because of the extremely high cost of pure Tamanu oil, consider diluting it with a quality, nourishing carrier oil such as jojoba oil, safflower oil, avocado oil, hempseed oil or grapeseed oil. Because of its extremely pungent nutty smell, masking it with a few drops (dropped from a dropper 2-3 drops) of lemongrass, ylang/ylang, patchouli or geranium would work well.

Additional information on Tamanu: This oil possesses significant antimicrobial qualities, as proven in antibacterial and anti-fungal tests. It contains powerful bactericide and fungicide agents that defeat human and animal pathogens. It is applied liberally to cuts, scrapes, burns, insect bites and stings, abrasions, acne and acne scars, psoriasis, diabetic sores, anal fissures, sunburn, dry or scaly skin, blisters, eczema, herpes sores, athletes foot, and the reduction of foot and body odour (makes for a fantastic, natural underarm deodorant). Honey has long been found to destroy large amounts of bacteria including Staphylococcus Aureus and Propiobacterium, common causes of acne. It is a natural anti oxidant and anti-inflammatory. It is high in vitamin C and promotes collagen formation in the skin. It is thought to be an excellent cleansing agent while improving skin texture and surface smoothness. It also provides excellent hair shine. Honey is said to be a natural antiseptic due to its tendency to absorb the life-sustaining moisture out of bacterial cell walls. As such, it is useful to include in healing salves and to use as a natural wound cover. Honey attracts the dirt from skin pores and dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. It, therefore, is said to be a natural skin cleanser and softener.

Collagen Collagen is a relatively simple protein, and an important building block for healthy bodies. It helps skin look firm, with a youthful appearance.

Collagen is present in normal skin. As dead skin cells are sloughed off, new cells replace them. As we age, our supply of collagen is diminished or degraded. This leads to laugh lines, wrinkles and other creases in the skin. Applying a collagen-enriched lotion or serum to your skin will help to rejuvenate the skin from beneath the surface.

Colloidal Oatmeal is produced by using special rollers to pulverize the oats, extracting the oat flour and causing it to become a colloid which means that the tiny particles of grain spread throughout the water and permanently change the consistency of that medium. Thus, the oatmeal particles do not sink to the bottom of the bathtub. It is very difficult to get the oatmeal fine enough by just grinding it in a home blender.

Colloidal oatmeal has traditionally been used to soothe and soften dry skin and may help to relieve itchy rashes and skin conditions such as chickenpox and shingles. Eczema (dry skin patches) as well skin as conditions such as insect bites, sores, and other minor skin irritations may respond well to colloidal oatmeal bath treatments.

French Green Clay has wonderful absorbtive abilities due to it's composition of micro molecules. It absorbs oils, toxic substances and impurities from your skin. and stimulates the skin with blood flow to damaged skin cells, revitalizing the complexion, and tightening pores. French Green Clay is marvelous for helping to clear problem skin. Use it daily on trouble spots, or weekly as part of a complete facial treatment. Mined from bedrock quarries in France, it is unscented & fragrance free.

Glacier Clay is found in the coastal region of British Columbia. This rare deposit of more than 30 minerals and trace elements is composed of particles as fine as fog mist (less than .15 microns in size), making it the finest glacial marine clay yet discovered in the world. It has a natural pH balance of 6.5 to 7.3.

It is easy to apply and removes by rinsing. A silky warm grey colour when wet, it dries in ten to fifteen minutes (depending on the thickness of application) to a light aquamarine hue. It feels great going on, revving up the circulation, detoxifying, exfoliating away dead skin cells while it tightens up wrinkles, leaving the skin soft, smooth and super alive. Having a bio-stimulant effect on the cells, it produces local skin warming, accelerates physiological processes and increases cell division in surrounding tissue. It is the perfect balancer and revitalizer. A glacial clay facial mask may slow the effect of aging on the skin surface, rejuvenating tired complexion and renewing the skin elasticity.

Hydrosols are derived from the Latin words hydro and sol, meaning "water solution." When plant material, such as the roots, barks, flowers, leaves, stems and seeds, is steam distilled to obtain an essential oil, certain chemical constituents of the plant first build up in the water. Only after they reach their maximum solubility in water, do they start to collect in a separate layer on the surface of the water (the essential oil). Many of the water-soluble plant compounds and some of the oil-soluble compounds wind up in the distillation water.

A hydrosol is the pure, distillate water that remains after essential oils are steam distilled from the original plant material. Hydrosols are usually clear and have the appearance and consistency of water. Their aroma is generally, but not always, similar to that of the essential oil, but the aroma is usually much more subtle. Hydrosols contain very small amounts of the essential oil. Some hydrosols do smell surprisingly different from the essential oil.

Hydrosols are gaining importance in aromatherapy because they offer an opportunity to use a well-diluted potency of a particular plant¿s essential oil for therapeutic purposes. The highly concentrated compounds found in essential oils may often be too strong for the human body, and therefore may be rejected or ineffective. Hydrosols on the other hand, are well-diluted water-soluble compounds, which are easily assimilated and absorbed by the body. Hydrosols are generally safer for use in babies and individuals with depressed immune systems.

Hydrosols are also sometimes incorrectly referred to as floral waters. Floral waters are typically aromatic waters made with the use of fragrance oils which do not contain the natural therapeutic properties that hydrosols contain.

MSM is used for joint pain & also very beneficial for detoxification

MSM is an organic source of sulfur which is widely utilized by the body in the formation of connective tissue and in the antioxidant glutathione. Sulfur is essential to good health but is easily destroyed by modern food processing methods resulting in widespread deficiencies. It is structurally and functionally important to more than 150 compounds in the body including enzymes, hormones, antibodies and free radical scavengers.
MSM is a natural substance that gives relief from joint pain, inflammation and allergies. MSM has gained considerable recognition for its results in relieving arthritis, for the relief of pain, head trauma, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and Alzheimer's disease.

MSM makes the cell walls flexible and elastic. If the concentration of MSM in the body is too low, the new cells lose some of their necessary flexibility and elasticity. MSM makes cell walls permeable, allowing water and nutrients to freely flow into cells and allowing wastes and toxins to properly flow out. MSM is a powerful detoxifier and is nontoxic.

Some people define "natural" as a substance that occurs naturally in the body and in plants. By that definition, MSM is natural. The raw material used to produce MSM is of natural origin. So it is true that MSM is produced from natural sources. MSM is a natural food substance and is not at all harmful to the body in any way. MSM is neither a medicine or a drug. MSM is a member of the sulfur family but should not be confused with sulfa drugs, to which some people are allergic. MSM is non-allergenic and does not interfere with any other pharmaceutical drugs or supplements.

MSM stands for Methylsulfonylmethane, a stable odorless metabolite of DMSO. MSM cleans the blood. MSM is less toxic than water. In its purified form, it is an odorless white crystal with a slightly bitter taste and looks very much like table sugar.
MSM takes out the inflammation, permits the muscles to heal and prevents them from becoming sore. MSM does not cure arthritis. It reduces the swelling that causes pain. MSM reduces allergies to food and pollens, helps the liver produce chorine, controls acidity in stomach and ulcers, coats intestinal tract so that parasites lose the ability to hang on, it helps with hypersensitivity to drugs, it increases the body's ability to produce insulin, and is important for carbohydrate metabolism and speeds wound healing.

Panthenol is an important part of skin and hair care. Providing revitalizing and conditioning effects, panthenol possesses humectant-like properties that aid in skin absorption.
One major benefit to panthenol is its contributory role in coenzyme A, which is needed by every living cell to help it grow and survive. Panthenol is a beneficial ingredient in after sun care lotions and anti-aging applications. Because it is an humectant, panthenol helps retain moisture and aids overall cell metabolism.
